Honoring Carlo Vettori: Master Italian Luthier and His Enduring Legacy

The Violin Society of America mourns the passing of Carlo Vettori, renowned Italian luthier, who died on July 20, 2025.

Born in Firenzuola in 1940, Carlo trained from a young age under his father, Dario Vettori I, “the violin maker of the mountains,” and later studied with master luthier Giuseppe Ornati. At just 16, he won a gold medal at the 1956 National Competition of Pegli.

After settling in Florence in 1959, he worked alongside his brother Paolo and became a leading figure in Italian violin making. Over his lifetime, he crafted over 220 violins, as well as 55 violas, 24 cellos, 10 guitars, 4 viole d’amore, 7 violas da gamba, 2 lutes, 4 archlutes, 2 hurdy-gurdies, 2 double basses, 5 quartets, 1 quintet, earning numerous accolades, including six gold medals and the prestigious Violino d’Oro in 1982.

A scholar as well as a maker, Carlo founded the magazine Arte Liutaria and authored several important texts. He also taught violin making, served as vice president of ANLAI, and contributed to international exhibitions and restorations.

His instruments and influence reached musicians and makers worldwide. Carlo Vettori’s legacy lives on in his work and the many lives he inspired.
