The Catgut Acoustical Society (CAS) brings together researchers in musical acoustics, violin makers, composers, string players and lovers of music. Its mission is to explore and apply scientific principles to the construction of instruments in the violin family.
CAS is best known for pioneering methods such as tuning free plates before instrument assembly—techniques now used by violin makers worldwide.
Founded by Carleen Hutchins in 1963, the CAS has worked to increase knowledge of musical acoustics and promote its practical applications. In 2004, CAS became part of The Violin Society of America as the CAS Forum.
